The main aim of this paper is to analyse and compare ways in which rock musicians communicate with their fans, as well as the factors that make their communication successful. The main inspiration for the paper came from the 1999 interview with late David Bowie in which he predicted the impact that the Internet was going to have on the music industry, as well as how it was going to evolve. The comparative analysis was carried out on three rock musicians whose career starts reach into the age before the social media and the Internet. The main focus of the analysis was the posted content on Facebook, Instagram and official websites of Bruce Springsteen, Nick Cave and Patti Smith. The analysis included observing posted content in the selected period of time, gathering the data in the shape of reactions to the posts and the number of comments on them. Another aspect analysed in the research were the other ways of communication, such as released new materials, side projects, special performances and similar which could also be taken as a way of communication with fans. The results show that the type of communication varies from a musician to a musician, but in total, they all present it in a professional way which is at the same time presented in a personal and friendly kind of way. Recommendations for further research might include interviewing a rock musician, doing the research in other genres or thoroughly researching one subgenre, including other social media in the research (e.g. Twitter), analysing visual identity, observing a band as a whole or as individuals and exploring modern musicians in the genre of alternative music.
