Abstract
The motivation behind this subject comes from the author’s own interest in consuming different types of news and a curiosity about the quality of these news sources. The objective of this paper was to determine if satirical news shows could be equally informative as network news broadcasts. A comparative analysis was made between two of the most popular network news broadcasts and two popular satirical news shows: CNN, Fox News, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. The analysis consisted of selecting two regular news programs from each of the news network broadcasts and examining these over the time frame of one week. For the satirical news shows all the episodes aired in one week were selected since they have a smaller amount of content. For the purpose of data collecting each headline from all of the selected programs was written down along with the summary of each story. The data was organized into tables which show the number and the type of topics covered. One main story from the week was chosen and analyzed in detail, to determine how each of the programs covered it. It was concluded that all the programs covered the facts accurately. The comparison analysis partially confirmed the hypothesis of this paper. Satirical news shows cannot be considered as informative as network news broadcasts, but they can be used as a complementary news source.

Motivacija koja stoji iza ove teme proizlazi iz vlastitog interesa autora za konzumiranjem različitih vrsta vijesti i znatiželje o kvaliteti tih izvora vijesti. Cilj ovog rada bio je utvrditi mogu li satirične vijesti biti jednako informativne kao i vijesti informativnih programa. Napravljena je usporedna analiza dviju najpopularnijih informativnih televizijskih postaja i dviju popularnih emisija satiričnih vijesti: CNN, Fox News, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah i Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. Analiza se sastojala od odabira dviju redovnih emisija vijesti informativnih postaja i promatranja istih u vremenskom okviru od jednog tjedna. Za satirične vijesti odabrane su sve epizode emitirane u jednom tjednu, jer postoji manja količinu sadržaja u takvim emisijama. U svrhu prikupljanja podataka zapisan je svaki naslov iz svih odabranih programa zajedno sa sažetcima svake priče. Podaci su organizirani u tablice koje prikazuju broj i vrstu obrađenih tema. Odabrana je i detaljno analizirana jedna glavna tjedna priča kako bi se utvrdio način na koji ju svaki program pokriva. Zaključeno je da su svi programi točno obradili činjenice te priče. Usporedna analiza djelomično je potvrdila hipotezu ovog rada. Satirične vijesti ne mogu se smatrati jednako informativnim kao vijesti informativnih programa, ali se mogu koristiti kao dopunski izvor vijesti.
